John grew up on a Hereford cattle ranch in northwestern South Dakota. He went to southern California after finishing High School in 1964, later served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1972 including in-country service in the Vietnam War from October 1967 through May 1968, his highest awarded being the Army Commendation Medal. John completed his bachelor’s degree in 1971 and later earned his law degree from Baylor University School of Law in November 1976 (licensed to practice law in Texas February 14, 1977).

John has tried jury and non-jury trials at all trial court levels, presented appeals in various Texas Court of Appeals and the Texas Supreme Court, plus appeals to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He practiced law in Arlington, Texas from March 1977 to November 2019, and still maintains association with his previous law firm as of counsel.

John is an avid tennis player, but for fun only. He is a long-time competitive cowboy action shooter, a life member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), life member of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), life member of the Lonestar Frontier Shooting Club (LSFSC) and maintains his military connection as a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW).

Since November 2019, John has returned to his roots living with his wife on a very small Hereford cattle ranch outside Lipan, Texas. He continues his interest in assisting seriously injured folks just as he has for the last 45 plus years, but now with a reduced workload.
